UAE Introduces a Tiered Sugar-Based Excise Tax System
The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has announced a shift from the flat 50% Excise Tax rate to a tiered-volumetric model.
Tax will now be calculated based on the total sugar content in sweetened drinks:
High Sugar (≥ 8g/100ml)
Higher tax rate
Moderate Sugar (≥ 5g & < 8g/100ml)
Moderate tax rate
Low Sugar (< 5g/100ml)
Lower tax rate

Your Compliance Requirement
To comply with this regulation, beverage companies must:
Test Product Samples
Submit product samples to accredited laboratories for sugar and sweetener content analysis.
Sugar Content Compliance Documentation
Provide verified sugar-content documentation from MoIAT-accredited laboratories.
ECAS Certification for Excise Tax
Obtain an ECAS Certificate from RACS for FTA Excise Tax purposes.
