The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) is the sole standardization body in the UAE established under the Federal Law No. 28 of 2001.
The main tasks of ESMA include:
• Formulating and issuance of national standards of UAE as well as adopting international standards and mandatory standards issued by binding resolutions of the Council Ministers
• Working on consumer protection, environment and national market and strengthening the national economy
• Preparation of standard specifications for reviewing by the specialized technical committees
• Follow up, monitor and advice on the application of standards adopted to commercial and industrial sectors around the constraints of conformity and quality.
As part of the mission of ESMA to advance the quality of life and sustainable development and supporting economy in UAE, technical regulations and standards for products and systems in the fields of safety, health and environmental protection and protection of consumer rights are being issued, implemented and monitored by the Authority.
All products under mandatory UAE government regulation are under the direct control of ESMA. This means that an approval in the form of certification from the Authority must be obtained prior to launching, handling, exhibition and selling inside the country.
